Many students find it difficult to learn the kinds of knowledge and thinking required by college or high school courses in mathematics, science, or other complex domains. Thus they often emerge with significant misconceptions, fragmented knowledge, and inadequate problem-solving skills. Most instructors or textbook authors approach their teaching efforts with a good knowledge of their field of expertise but little awareness of the underlying thought processes and kinds of knowledge required for learning in scientific domains. In this book, Frederick Reif presents an accessible coherent introduction to some of the cognitive issues important for thinking and learning in scientific or other complex domains (such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, or expository writing).

Reif, whose experience teaching physics at the University of California led him to explore the relevance of cognitive science to education, examines with some care the kinds of knowledge and thought processes needed for good performance; discusses the difficulties faced by students trying to deal with unfamiliar scientific domains; describes some explicit teaching methods that can help students learn the requisite knowledge and thinking skills; and indicates how such methods can be implemented by instructors or textbook authors.

Writing from a practically applied rather than predominantly theoretical perspective, Reif shows how findings from recent research in cognitive science can be applied to education. He discusses cognitive issues related to the kinds of knowledge and thinking skills that are needed for science or mathematics courses in high schools or colleges and that are essential prerequisites for more advanced intellectual performance. In particular, he argues that a better understanding of the underlying cognitive mechanisms should help to achieve a more scientific approach to science education.

The Science and Engineering of Materials

This text provides an understanding of the relationship between structure, processing, and properties of materials. By selecting the appropriate topics from this wealth of material, instructors can emphasize materials, provide a general overview, concentrate on mechanical behavior, or focus on physical properties. Since the book has more material than is needed for a one-semester course, students will also have a useful reference for subsequent courses in manufacturing, materials, design, or materials selection.

Knitting
by caruba

Question by Nicole: What's the difference between crocheting and knitting?

I know knitting has 2 needles, but I am just learning to crochet, are the similar enough where I could easily pick up knitting?
also, if I found a knitting pattern I like, could I "convert" it to a crochet pattern?

no. crocheting and knitting are very different in style. you won't be able to knit just because you can crochet. think of it as a completely new language. just because you can speak english doesn't mean you can speak french. crocheting and knitting are different in style. in chocheting, the patterns are very open so its like lace. but with knitting, the weaves are close together. crocheting is also like twisting and knotting the yarn together, where as knitting is tying it in a way. it makes a more solid product than crocheting. you can take knitting patterns and transfer them into crocheting patterns however just by looking at the structure of what you would be making. but you might wan't to hold off on that until you learn to crochet a little better.

hope this helps :)

Newsweek called renowned minister Timothy Keller Ć¢€œa C. S. Lewis for the twenty-first centuryĆ¢€ in a feature on his first book, The Reason for God. In that book, he offered a rational explanation of why we should believe in God. Now, in The Prodigal God, he uses one of the best-known Christian parables to reveal an unexpected message of hope and salvation.

Taking his trademark intellectual approach to understanding Christianity, Keller uncovers the essential message of Jesus, locked inside his most familiar parable. Within that parable Jesus reveals God's prodigal grace toward both the irreligious and the moralistic. This book will challenge both the devout and skeptics to see Christianity in a whole new way.

Dick Gregory's Natural Diet for Folks Who Eat: Cookin' With Mother Nature!

"An introduction to natural foods written with an eye to good health and an ear for the witty line. Even for those not ready to replace sirloin with soy bean, Gregory's discourse on the typical mistreatment of the digestive tract should be informative- it certainly is amusing. There are sections on Gregory's various fasts, suggested diets for putting on and taking off weight, and even a discussion of natural food substitutes for your favorite alcoholic concoction. Good fun and a good guide for those who feel they are what they eat."
