Answer by flazatty First of all, the period from 1860 to 1877 was the time of the Civil War (1861-1865) and Reconstruction (1865-1877).It saw the destruction of the slave-labor based society of the South.
Also, following the war, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the Constitution were adopted, which transferred significant power from the states to the federal government, and particularly to the federal judiciary, which acquired much greater ability to rule state laws unconstitutional.
In many respects, the Civil War and Reconstruction were the second Constitutional Convention, except that it was fought on the battlefield.
