Can you tell me the process on how private detectives hire informants to help them with their cases? Also, I want a sidekick for my protagonist who is a private detective. Which sidekick best fits private detectives?

A sidekick for your private detective could be a criminology student who wants to do some work during the summer holidays. A sort of budding Sherlock Holmes.
