How important are college admissions essays?

I am applying to two texas colleges that have optional (non required) essays. I finished the "Issue of importance" essay, but i cannot think of anyone who has made a difference in my life, or any hardships i went through. Do these play a key role in getting admitted?

Essays have three functions:

1. They test whether a student can follow directions.

2. They indicate how well the student writes.

3. They give students the opportunity to explain problems with their records, or hardships they have had to overcome to attain their records.

It is possible that poor performance for categories 1. and 2. could disqualify a student, and that an essay which covers category 3. well could qualify a student who otherwise would not be admitted.

Otherwise, essays are usually not a determining factor in admissions.
