Answer by Chris K
1.son
2.son

from "ser" meaning "to be"

Son means "they are (by nature)". Son is from the verb "ser" meaning "to be (by nature)"
if the if the shirts or the books were doing something then you would replace "son" with "estan" (from estar, meaning "to be (doing)")

for example

Las camisas son azules.
-and-
Las camisas estan cayendo.

It doesn't always work exactly that way with ser and estar but you just kind of have to learn the difference.
